Die Situation ist in Spanien ganz anders als in Österreich. Hier kennt jeder mindestens ein oder zwei Personen, die krank waren oder sind. Spanien hat rund 47 Millionen Einwohner, aber schone eine halbe Million hat sich mit dem Virus infiziert und fast 30.000 Menschen sind mit Covid19 gestorben. Man schätzt, dass sich rund 5% der Bevölkerung mit dem Virus infiziert hat, ein Prozent davon sind der Krankheit erlegen. Einer von Fünf! Entsprechend hoch ist die Angst der Spanier, sich mit dem Virus anzustecken, auch weil die Gesundheitsversorgung nicht so gut aufgestellt ist wie z.B. in Ländern wie Österreich oder Deutschland.
Der Grund für die hohen Infektionszahlen in Spanien wird generell mit dem Lebensstil erklärt. Die Spanier treffen sich gerne in großen Gruppen und Familienverbänden, umarmen und küssten sich häufig und Mehrgenerationen-Haushalte sind keine Seltenheit. Diese alten gesellschaftlichen Traditionen lassen sich nicht so einfach innerhalb von sechs Monaten abstellen und verändern. Wir müssen praktisch überall Maske tragen, auch in der Öffentlichkeit, und der Widerstand dagegen ist relativ gering, eben weil so viele Menschen schon eine persönliche Erfahrung mit dem Virus gemacht haben.
Das Gute an der jetzigen Situation in Spanien ist, dass vor allem junge Leute von der Infektion betroffen sind und die Sterblichkeitsrate relativ niedrig ist, im Vergleich zu März und April 2020. Aber jetzt, wo der Sommer zu Ende ist und die viele staatliche Hilfen auslaufen sollen, werden die gravierenden wirtschaftlichen Probleme beginnen.

La situación es muy diferente en España respecto a Austria. Todos aquí conocen al menos una o dos personas que estaban o están enfermas. España tiene alrededor de 47 millones de habitantes, pero medio millón ya se ha contagiado del virus y casi 30.000 personas han muerto por Covid19. Se estima que alrededor del 5% de la población se infectó con el virus y el uno por ciento de ellos sucumbió a la enfermedad. ¡Uno de cada cinco! El temor español a contraer el virus es correspondientemente alto, también porque el sistema de salud no está tan bien como en países como Austria o Alemania.
La razón del alto número de infecciones en España generalmente se explica por el estilo de vida. A los españoles les gusta reunirse en grandes grupos y asociaciones familiares, abrazarse y besarse con frecuencia, y los hogares multigeneracionales son frecuentes. Estas viejas tradiciones sociales no pueden apagarse y cambiarse fácilmente en seis meses. De hecho, tenemos que usar mascarilla en todos lugares y la resistencia en contra de ella es relativamente baja, precisamente porque muchas personas ya han tenido una experiencia personal con el virus.
Lo bueno de la situación actual en España es que la infección afecta principalmente a jóvenes y la tasa de mortalidad es relativamente baja en comparación de marzo y abril 2020. Pero ahora que ha terminado el verano y se están agotando muchas ayudas estatales los problemas económicos apenas comienzan.

The situation is very different in Spain. Everyone here knows at least one or two people who were or are sick. Spain has around 47 million inhabitants, but half a million have been already infected with the virus and almost 30,000 people have died with Covid19. It is estimated that around 5% of the population got the virus, and one percent of them succumbed to the disease. One out of five! The Spanish fear of contracting the virus is correspondingly high, also because the health care system is not as well set up as e.g. in countries like Austria or Germany.
The reason for the high number of infections in Spain is generally explained with the lifestyle. The Spaniards like to meet in large groups and family associations, hug and kiss frequently, and multi-generational households are common. These old social traditions cannot be easily turned off and changed within six months. We actually have to wear masks everywhere, also in public, and the resistance against it is relatively low, precisely because so many people already had a personal experience with the virus.
The good thing about the current situation in Spain is that mainly young people are affected by the infection and the mortality rate is relatively low compared to March and April 2020. But now that the summer is over and a lot of government aid is running out the economic problems are just beginning.
